Football Federation of Irad

About the FFI

The federation

The Football Federation of Irad (Irad Futbol Federatsiyasy, FFI) was founded in Talas in 1993 and registered under territorial law. Its first act was a rule on names: clubs had to take Iradi or neutral names, and so Neftyanik became Neftchi Nurzhan, Dinamo Talas became Tulpar and the railway club Lokomotiv became Temirjolchu.

The first Irad League season was played in 1994. The league has missed only one season, 2007, cancelled because of the war, and resumed in 2008 under the administration of the Irad Special Economic Zone.

The federation's president since 2012 is Kanat Ermekov, a former Tulpar defender.

Competitions

Irad League (Irad Ligasy): ten clubs from the Irad Special Economic Zone in a triple round robin of 27 rounds from March to November. From 1994 to 2019 the league had eight clubs playing four rounds; it was enlarged to ten clubs in 2020. The bottom club is relegated.

First League (Birinchi Liga): eight clubs; the champions are promoted to the Irad League.

Irad Cup: the knockout cup for the clubs of both divisions.

Women's League: six clubs, founded in 2009.

National futsal cup, played at the Irad Central Sports Complex in Talas.

The national team

The national team plays in white and crimson, and its home ground is the 21,000-seat Silk Road Arena in Talas. The federation joined CONIFA, the federation for teams outside FIFA, in 2014, and the national team played in the CONIFA World Football Cup in 2016 and 2018.

Its other matches are friendlies against Iradi American selections from Chicago, Kazakh club sides and teams of US service personnel. The annual Irad Day friendly in March, first played in 1995, was not held in 2025 after its American opponents withdrew.

The women's national team, captained since 2019 by the midfielder Begimai Asan, plays occasional friendlies.

International membership

In 1996 the federation applied to join the Asian Football Confederation, pointing to the membership of other US territories such as Guam. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan objected, and the application was deferred without a decision. A new application in 2008 was not taken up, because FIFA's statutes require its members to represent a recognised state.

Federation president Kanat Ermekov has called the 1996 deferral “the theft of a generation”. Without membership, Irad's clubs cannot enter continental competitions, and players who want to play official international football must take the citizenship of a neighbouring state.

In October 2026 the federation said it will seek to host an international futsal championship for CONIFA and invited federations at the Irad Central Sports Complex in 2030.

Stadium Order Regulations (2015)

The Stadium Order Regulations were adopted by the federation in 2015, after the abandoned derby of 11 May 2014. They apply at every match played under the federation's authority.

They prohibit pyrotechnics, and chants and banners insulting national dignity, including by name the chants “Kobozev – Russian city”, “Suitcase, station, Russia” and “Kobozev!”. Clubs are responsible for stewarding at their grounds, and breaches are referred to the disciplinary committee.

Youth football

Youth football in Talas grew in the territorial period. The Liberty Youth Soccer League, founded in 1994 by American Christian charities and families from Talas Air Base, ran Saturday leagues for boys and girls, and from 1997 the Talas Youth Soccer Academy trained players with coaches recruited from American colleges. Schools introduced girls' teams in the same years.

Broadcasting

IradOne has held the broadcasting rights of the Irad League since its sports channel, IradOne Sport, was launched in 2016. Commentary is in English; IradOdin carries Russian-language commentary of Neftchi Nurzhan's matches.
